UMM’s students represent a great asset. Each year, staff from UMM’s Community Service and Volunteerism in the Office of Student Activities support students' engagement in service to the community. At the same time, the City of Morris is seeing a growing number of older adults, in need of some volunteer help, both for small tasks around their households or just for some “company”.
The goal of the Adopt a Grandparent Program is to better combine this UMM student asset with the community need. Strategically, this outreach program will identify and connect UMM students with seniors in need of companionship. This program will also serve as a natural complement to one of UMM’s current service-learning initiatives. During year one, the target is 10 students and seniors; year two will see 20 pairings, and year three 30 pairings.
