Most local established businesses are not of the size and sophistication to carry on a continuous research and development program as part of their day-to-day operations. As such, these businesses miss the opportunities of new product development, marketing changes, etc. Aside from research and development, they often do not recognize cost efficiencies in process streamlining, marketing, administrative procedures, materials handling, and the like. At the same time, UMM has a wealth of expertise in the form of faculty and students in the Management and Economics disciplines that could be tapped to provide such services to local businesses. The University of Minnesota system has a host of resources that can be utilized as well. With this outreach activity, UMM proposes to develop a directory of available campus expertise, publicize it across the community, and deliver such assistance to Morris businesses.
