Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are becoming commonplace. GIS provides community leaders with modern, electronic mapping of the area which is emerging as the most accessible way to track community information, from fire safety issues to the condition of housing stock.
The Morris Planning Commission has expressed frustration with the lack of baseline information. According to one Commission member, “The Planning Commission is stymied, and cannot plan well because of a lack of available data.” Stevens County Coordinator, Jim Thoreen feels the County would benefit from having more complete GIS mapping for the City of Morris.
The City of Morris and its engineering consultants (Widseth Smith Nolting of Alexandria, MN) have completed only very preliminary work on local GIS, and would like assistance to complete elements and overlays of the local GIS map. This is a good fit for students in the Geography discipline at UMM. Technical equipment and software is available for students to do this work.
